Gas safety inspector: who can do a gas safety check?
“Gas safety inspector” is a common search, but the person you need is a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Who can carry out the check
Gas safety checks, including the landlord Gas Safety Record (CP12), must be carried out by an engineer on the Gas Safe Register who is qualified for the appliances being checked. It is illegal for anyone else to do gas work.
Inspector, engineer or surveyor?
Council and Health and Safety Executive inspectors enforce gas safety law. They do not carry out your landlord check. Gas Safe Register can also inspect the work of its registered engineers and investigate unsafe gas work. For your own property, you book a Gas Safe registered engineer.
How to check them
- Ask to see the Gas Safe ID card: photo, licence number and the appliances they can work on
- Check the licence number on the Gas Safe Register website
- Make sure the card covers your appliances, for example boilers and cookers
What the check includes
The engineer checks each gas appliance, its flue and ventilation, and the pipework, and records the results and any defects. See what a gas safety certificate is.
