How long does it take to install a boiler?

A straightforward replacement is often completed in a day. Changes to the system or the boiler position take longer.

Loft and difficult-access boilers can take longer.

Typical timings

  • Like-for-like replacement: often completed in about a day
  • Replacing a regular boiler with a combi, or moving the boiler: usually longer, because pipework, flue and tanks change
  • Boiler with a new cylinder: allow longer for the cylinder and its safety equipment

These are general guides. The installer confirms the duration for your home, including how long the heating and hot water will be off.

What affects the time

  • The type of replacement and any system changes
  • Flue route and access, for example flats and loft rooms
  • Upgrading the gas pipe
  • Cleaning the system and fitting a filter
  • Commissioning, handover and paperwork

Before and after the day

A free survey is done first, so the work is agreed in advance. After installation you receive the commissioning and warranty paperwork; see which certificate you get. For preparation and the day itself, see what to expect on installation day.

Planning around it

Ask how long heating and hot water may be unavailable, clear a route and working area, and tell us about parking and access. See parking, access and keys.

Common questions

Will I be without heating overnight?

Most like-for-like replacements are finished the same day. Ask the installer at the survey, because longer jobs can run over.

Can a boiler be installed in half a day?

Some simple swaps are quicker, but the system flush, commissioning and handover also take time, so plan for a full day.
