How to choose a plumber
What to ask, what to check and how to compare quotes when you are looking for a plumber in London.

Questions to ask first
- What exactly does the price cover, and what is extra?
- Is a call-out or diagnostic fee charged, and is it deducted from the repair?
- Who supplies the parts, and are they included?
- When is the price confirmed: before the visit or after?
- What happens if the job turns out to be different?
For gas work
Anyone working on gas appliances must be on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see the ID card and check it. This applies to boilers, hobs, cookers and gas pipework, and gas safety checks.
Comparing quotes
- Compare like with like: same scope, same parts
- Be wary of vague quotes or prices that change on the day
- Ask what happens if more work is found
- Ask about guarantees and who to contact afterwards
- Cheapest is not always lowest cost once extras are added

Common questions
How do I find a plumber near me?
Check the areas a company covers and ask for the full postcode check before booking. See areas we cover.
Do plumbers need to be registered?
Plumbing in general is not licensed, but gas work legally requires Gas Safe registration. Ask about relevant qualifications for unvented cylinders and other specialist work.
