Hydrogen-ready
boilers.

You may have seen boilers described as “hydrogen-ready”. Here is what that means, where government policy stands, and why it should not stop you replacing a boiler that needs it.

What does hydrogen-ready mean?

A hydrogen-ready boiler runs on natural gas today, like any other gas boiler. It is designed so that, if the gas network ever switched to hydrogen, an engineer could convert it to burn hydrogen with a small number of parts rather than replacing the whole boiler.

Hydrogen is not supplied to homes through the gas network today, so a hydrogen-ready boiler performs the same as an ordinary condensing gas boiler.

What the government has said

In its Warm Homes Plan, published in January 2026, the government said that hydrogen is not yet a proven technology for home heating, and that any role would come later and is likely to be limited. It said a further consultation on hydrogen would follow.

The plan focuses on insulation, heat pumps and heat networks rather than hydrogen.

Should you wait?

No. If your boiler is old, unreliable or broken, there is no reason to wait for hydrogen. A new condensing boiler is far more efficient than an old one, and most last 10 to 15 years with servicing.

If a hydrogen-ready model costs more, it is reasonable to ask whether that feature is worth paying for, given current policy.

What to look for instead

  • The right size and type for your home
  • Manufacturer warranty length and its conditions
  • Good controls – weather or load compensation, or a smart thermostat
  • A magnetic filter and system flush

All of these are included or shown in our online boiler price.
