Repair or replace your boiler?
A fault does not automatically mean you need a new boiler. Compare the diagnosis, repair scope and condition of the system before deciding.
Start with the fault
Tell us the symptoms, any displayed code, boiler make and model, and whether heating or hot water is affected. A diagnostic visit costs £92.50 for the first 45 minutes. Minor adjustments may be possible within that time; parts and further work are separately assessed and agreed. The diagnostic fee does not guarantee a completed repair.
When a repair may make sense
- The cause is identified and the required parts are available.
- The repair cost is proportionate to the likely remaining usefulness of the boiler.
- The boiler has otherwise been reliable and meets your needs.
- Existing manufacturer cover may apply; check its terms before commissioning chargeable work.
When replacement deserves consideration
- Repeated failures or several significant defects make further repairs less attractive.
- Suitable parts are unavailable or the repair is uneconomic.
- Your heating or hot water needs have changed.
- The installation or system needs substantial work that should be considered alongside the boiler.
Age and appearance are not a diagnosis
Age is one factor, not a fixed replacement deadline. A display code alone does not identify every underlying fault, and a missing visible plastic pipe is not enough to classify the boiler. Ask the engineer to explain the findings and the practical options. Any safety-related action takes priority over a cost comparison.
Ask for a fair comparison
Compare the complete repair price with a properly scoped replacement quote. Include the remaining cover, likely downtime, system work and ongoing maintenance. Avoid assuming a fixed percentage energy saving; actual use and savings depend on the installation and household.
